Such sound carriers are not available in stores. The sound carriers are sent by the record companies to selected radio stations, music magazines and to specialized dealers free of charge, in order to make attentive on a new single of an artist or a band. In some cases, the promos are sent out several weeks before the official sales launch of the sound carriers.

The design and also the content of the promo recordings differ from the sales copy. In order to point out the promotional purpose of the sound carrier, a note ("For Promotion Only - Sample for your information" or similar) is printed on the record cover. Since promotional records are only produced in small numbers and are not available in regular stores, they are a sought-after item for collectors.
